This is a hand-turned salad bowl made of layers of Cherry & Maple wood. At its widest, the diameter is roughly 9” and the height is roughly 3 1/2”. Since no two bowls are the same, there can be slight variations of up to ½” between bowls. I used Odie's Oil for the finish. The base of the bowl is flat. (The revolving tray is for display purposes only and not included.)
A funny story with this bowl... I had two "oopsies" while turning this bowl. First, after a catch with my bowl gouge, a big chunk of it broke off and went flying across my shop! It was a clean break, and so I was able to glue it back together. The clean break made for an easy glue up, and I'd actually venture to say that this is even stronger than it was before! Second, on my very last hollowing cut with my gouge, I went too deep and made the bottom of the bowl too thin. Instead of scrapping it, I used a large forstner bit to drill out the thin area and made a Cherry plug, which gives the bowl an almost "bulls-eye" look to it.
All this to say: The bowl is perfectly usable (or else I wouldn't put it on my shop!) and should last for years if properly cared for. It was a learning experience and reminder to pay attention! You can see some slight evidence of the crack in the pictures as well as the Cherry dot.
This is bowl #108, which I finished on 8-27-23.
